How to Wear Sequin Leggings

Updated on February 27, 2016

How to Wear Sequin Leggings

Sequins. Either you love them or hate them, but if you're reading this you love, them just like me. Let's be honest though, while sequins are everywhere (you can't go to any store and not see sequins), they can be intimating. The good thing, however, is that sequins are being incorporated into every article of clothing and accessory: gloves, hats, dresses, tops, sweaters, bags, and skirts. My favorite, and often less worn, is the sequin legging. But how do you wear it? Adding a pop of sequin here and there with an accessory is quite easy, and on a dress it seems obvious but I'm here to show you that sequin leggings are more versatile than they may appear. Here are a few different ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe.

From the Runway

Designer Isabel Marant first introduced her spectacular sequin leggings in Fall 2010. This is also when I first noticed (and appreciated) sequin leggings. I love how Marant paired her leggings with a classic sweater and heels. She made them work by down playing the sparkliness of the pants with casual sweaters, tissue-thin tees, trench coats, and pumps. This outfit looks just right and is not out-dated or over-the-top.

I like to think that her leggings helped introduce this major trend. While I don't know for sure, she did introduce a new way to rock sequins that was quickly picked up and loved by celebs.

The Celeb Way

Celebrities are quick to pick up trends from the runway and incorporate them into a more wearable way. My favorite celeb sequin legging look is Blake Lively chose these shining blue ones back in 2009 and again in 2011. Both times, however, Lively kept her outfit relatively simple with a long button-up tunic top and minimal accessories.

I think that she is always a great fashion guide (she doesn't have her own personal shopper and reportedly puts all her own outfits together). When wearing sequin leggings, think of Blake: down play your shirt and shoes (I love how she paired this look with ankle booties) and accessories. Your pants should do all the talking for this outfit. If you do choice accessories (like Blake did) don't let them overpower the pants. Earrings and a chunky bracelet are fine, but anything more is pushing it.

The Classic Sequin Look

The most common way fashionistas, bloggers, and celebs are wearing their sequin leggings is with with a blazer and black pumps or ankle boots. Many (like Marant and Lively) keep the top simple--black blazer with matching black heels or boots and a solid color top underneath. Most keep accessories to a bare minimum, and are usually just seen with a nice leather purse. This look is chic with just enough edge to make heads turn.

If You're Plus Size

Just because you're plus size doesn't mean you can't wear sequin leggings-- anyone can. Just remember that the rules are the same: keep your top and shoes simple, and your accessories to a minimum. I love how Gabi Fresh rocked her sequin leggings with a stylish peplum top (to cinch in the waist and show off the curves) and shades. She looks chic and effortlessly cool.

Give It a Bohemian Edge

Want something different than the classic look? Then add a bohemian twist to your sequin leggings with layers, fringe, and Chelsea booties. I love this look because it really down plays the pants yet still has an edgy vibe.

This also shows how you can wear a variety of colors with sequin leggings and still look polished and put together. And it gives a basic bohemian-inspired outfit a fun edge.

Rock n Roll Twist

I really love this look because it shows how easy it is to replace your favorite pair of jeans with sequin leggings for an outfit that's more put together and, in this instance, rock n roll. This is the essence of effortlessly cool. This outfit is also great for day or night because it takes a basic outfit (t-shirt and tennis shoes) and revamps it; turning you into a rock star in the process.

Dress It Down

Who says you can't do two trends at once? In most cases, I would tell you to calm it down, but this outfit works because the top is minimal and doesn't over-shine the pants. With color-blocked pumps, hair pulled back, and a few accessories, this look is effortlessly chic and easily doable. I really like this outfit because it also shows how to balance trends (always a tricky thing) without looking like you're overdoing it.

Under a Dress

Sequin leggings under a dress sounds like quite an impossible outfit to pull off, but it's actually quite easy. In this case, the focus is on the dress and less on the leggings. It's a fun way to add a pop of style to any slightly boring-feeling outfit. I love when sequin leggings are paired with a chiffon, flowing dress. It gives the classic girly look a fashion-forward and tough-girl feel.

This outfit uses the leggings as layers, which I also love. It's perfect for fall/winter and when you're starting to get the winter-boring-wardrobe blues.
